"Nobody in music should ever assume that because you're doing a certain type of music that it's better than other types of music. It's all relative. Everybody's equal. Music is music." The words of Tony Coleman; raised in Kissimmee, FL, drummer with B.B. King for 33 years and an all around nice person.

Tony and John Thrasher, both professional drummers, struck up a friendship exchanging touring stories and sharing their passion for keeping music and the arts alive in our communities. This resulted in a free clinic given by Tony at Excel Music School of New Tampa, owned by John, just prior to B.B. King's concert at Ruth Eckert Hall on January 7th. His entertaining style captivated all present. He has a passion for sharing the lessons learned from the greats in order to keep live music, the Shuffle and the Blues alive. His perspective was engaging, as he shared stories of self

trained musicians trying to explain patterns to him, "You know, play like a two hump camel, with one of his humps off, and his foot's hurting." Another favorite request was to play like "chopped barbecue". He promotes music education as a way to clearly express yourself to other musicians. "Never allow anyone to look at you and assume what your talents and skills are," said Tony. "Always practice and be ready."  "Words to live by," says Thrasher, who is excited to be offering these types of clinics for students. He also mentioned that excerpts from this

clinic will be on the Excel Music website next month (ExcelMusic.org).

Is it any wonder that Tony has also

performed with various greats such as Etta James, Buddy Guy, Bobby Blue Bland and Otis Clay, written jingles for NW Airlines and Calloway Golf, performed as an independent artist with CD's to his credit (yes, he can sing and front a band), performed on Waylon Jenning's tribute album, and is a close friend of Willie Nelson? His musical skills are diverse as a result of his willingness to learn from all. Tony credits his Grandmother with his talent and positive, can do, outlook on life. So the next time you go out to see a great like B.B. King, don't forget to check out the drummer. And don't forget – you must learn to excel.
